In the race…….
Like I said, here is one job that is good for college students trying to earn some investment capital, or any money for that matter, caddying at a private golf course.
Caddying is an excellent way to make money. The typical caddy earns $35-$60 per bag, on private golf courses. If you know how to caddy and are good at it, you can carry two bags at once, thus earning $70-$120 a round. Depending on how many rounds you do, usually it is one but if there is a lack of caddies it can be two, you can make a nice amount of money. If you caddied two rounds a weekend, once on Saturday and once on Sunday, while carrying two bags, you would make $140-$240 a weekend. Not bad. Sometimes you could get lucky and caddy two rounds in a day, which means even more money to start out with in the market.
There are some cons though. First, it is physically demanding. Second, there is a hierarchy at most golf courses. The senior caddy gets to pick which round he wants and then it goes down to the next in line on the hierarchical totem pole. Just starting out is going to be tough. There may be times that you will not be able to caddy at all. There are some ways to improve your chances though.
Let me just say, you might as well try caddying before already giving up on it thinking there is no way you will get out since you have never done it and are too low on the ladder; everyone had to start at the bottom. Having a friend that caddies will help. He can teach you how it is done as well as vouch for you. Another way to get established is to try and caddy on some weekdays. The weekends are when all the high school kids will usually try and caddy. Being in college, you don’t have to follow a strict 8am-3pm class schedule. If you have a day that doesn’t have any classes or classes after 1pm, stop by the golf course and see if you can pick up a round. It is crucial to be there early, try stopping by at 7am. The majority of rounds start around 10am.
By going during weekdays when there are no high school students, the senior caddy is more likely to remember you during the weekend and might even help you out getting rounds on the weekends. It is worth a try.
Caddying is a great way to make money. A couple of my friends have been caddying for years. They usually do two rounds with two bags a day in the summer, making $480+ (sometimes they get tipped extra). Obviously people can’t golf during the winter, unless you live in a nice climate. This is a nice summer job as well as a great source of income during the school year. It does not require too much time and you get paid really well for the time you do spend carrying clubs.
…….everyone starts at the same line.
